The CBC Cobras went completely undefeated to take the Petra T20 Tournament for the first time since its inauguration…dedicating the historic win to injured fellow student, Robert Zeelie.
Captained by Mitch Gaitskell, the Cobras were spitting venom from the start of the tournament yesterday, taking all their games against Petra, Prince Edward, Churchill and Milton to face Prince Edward in the finals this afternoon.
The finals proved to be an electrifying show of cricket prowess by CBC: the Cobras lost the toss and were sent up to bowl, Mphokuhle Dube claiming a wicket with his very first delivery in the first two minutes of the match…and totally silencing the field.
But Mpho was not yet done, executing a repeat performance with his second ball. PE were on the ropes and from there onwards wickets fell at regular intervals, mainly from the impressive Rahul Vaghmaria, Anele Ngwenya and Gilbert Tsikai; PE were restricted to a paltry 61 all out.
To their credit PE bowled very well with the left arm spin bowler causing some problems and panic in the CBC camp. He took some big CBC wickets, namely Jason James, Zane Pittaway and Mitch. However a great deal of credit should go to young Gilbert and Kayibongwe Malunga who dug in and built a partnership through some sensible batting and plenty of temperament.
At the end of the afternoon the clouds and the crowds gathered to witness the prize-giving with CBC not only winning the tournament’s Comarton Champion’s trophy but also three Man of the Match titles in various fixtures, namely Rahul Vaghmaria (in the game vs Churchill), Zane Pittaway (vs Prince Edward) and Mitch Gaitskell (vs Milton.)
In addition Rahul was awarded Bowler of the Tournament and Mitch Batsman of the Tournament as well as Player of the Tournament.
Said Team Manager, Mr A Mdhlongwa: “Thanks to Acting Headmaster, Mr K Muhomba, Board Chairman, Mr P Edmeads, and all the parents and boys who came out to support the team. Well done, Cobras!”
